Hiphop-legende Rich Medina is regelmatig in Groningen. Als resident van Loft spint deze man de meest groovy tunes. Naast zijn skills achter de wheels of steel, geeft Medina colleges over hiphop en de culturele achtergronden van de muziek. Wij spreken hem na één van zijn lezingen voor Studium Generale in VERA.
‘I’m talking about hip hop culture, not rap.’ Het lijkt een grap, maar Rich Medina is bloedserieus. In zijn ogen heeft de money machine die hiphop nu is, niets te maken met de cultuur waarin hij opgroeide. Volgens de dj draait nu alles om geld en zijn artiesten hun authenticiteit kwijt. In de twee uur die Medina doorbrengt op het podium in de grote zaal van VERA, krijgen we een crash course echte hiphop-geschiedenis, anekdotes en trivia. Van Theodore the Wizzard die het scratchen uitvond doordat hij zijn plaat altijd probeerde stil te zetten als z’n moeder de kamer binnenstormde, tot de slipmat op je platenspeler die werd uitgevonden door niemand minder dan Grandmaster Flash. Ja, die gast van de Furious Five inderdaad, The Message may ring a bell.
Playing the crowd
Vroeger ging het niet om de rapper, of de mc zoals die toen heette. In de tijd dat Rich Medina zijn eerste plaatjes spinde, draaide alles om het feestje.
‘We had the dj who was trying out all kinds of stuff to keep the people dancing. Then there was the MC who was calling people out, playing the crowd and entertaining everybody while the dj was doing his thing. And last but not least, you would often see the b-boys and girls and the artists who were airbrushing the place.’
Ja, een block party heet dat. De eerste werd georganiseerd door DJ Kool Herc voor de verjaardag van zijn zusje. Dit feestje aan 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in de Bronx had alles wat de hiphopcultuur eigen is. Graffiti, breakdancers, een mc en een dj.
Nu vraag je je af wat b-boy betekent. Niets minder dan break boy.
‘Because the dj would spin two identical records over and over again and especially the part where all the instruments stop playing and you can only hear the rhythm section, also known as the break. That’s when all the b-boys and girls would start poppin’ and locking, dancing to the break.’
Ja, breakdancers dus.
Fire away, my friend
Na twee uur college zitten we dan eindelijk met z’n drieën backstage. De fans zijn even de deur uit, fotograaf Bolderdijk heeft alle ruimte om foto’s te nemen, terwijl ik zo goed mogelijk mijn vragen probeer te formuleren. We hebben maar tien minuten en aan het gezicht van Rich te zien gaat het ook niet langer dan dat worden. Met een vermoeide, doch tevreden glimlach neemt de dj een slok whisky en steekt een peuk op. ‘Fire away, my friend.’
Het lijkt me heel vreemd om geschiedenisles te geven over een cultuur waarin je zelf bent opgegroeid. Rich ziet dat zelf anders, blijkt al snel.
‘When I’m on stage talking about hip hop, yeah, I’m an academic, but the research I’m talking about is literally my life. What I teach is more of a hands-on approach. I’m an experiential teacher, not a professor.’
Het verschil is volgens Medina dat hij al zijn kennis en skills heeft opgedaan in het veld. En omdat hij het veld kent als z’n broekzak, is hij de expert.
‘You learn mechanics from a guy that fixes cars, you learn plumbing from a guy that fixes pipes. Academically most of the time you learn from people that have read a lot of books. The whole world suffers under that.’
Double momming
Medina is al tegen de vijftig, als jochie was hij één van de jongste leden van Zulu Nation, de groep van Afrika Bambaata. Ik ben heel benieuwd wanneer zijn liefde voor muziek ontstaan is. Maar bovenal hoe zijn ouders reageerden toen hij ze vertelde dat hij een carrière als dj najaagde. De artiest lacht en neemt nog een slok whisky. Op de eerste vraag is zijn antwoord vrij kort. Medina vertelt dat zijn zus achttien jaar ouder is dan hij. Achttien jaar?!
‘Yeah, I know what you’re thinking and you’re right. Double momming!’
Hij lacht hard en vertelt dat de man van zijn oudste zus dj is.
‘The guy had a regular job during the week, but in the weekend he was a disc jockey. So I learned the skills from a very early age.’
Meest bizarre moment
En wat vond z’n moeder ervan dat-ie dj wilde worden?
‘My mother asked: “Do the boys you’re going to hang out with have guns? No? Good. Then go. Because I know these other guys you like and they’re dangerous. So if this is a change from that, be careful, have fun and be blessed.”’ De sigaret is uitgegaan, Medina doet geen moeite om ’m weer aan te steken. Ik zie aan zijn houding dat mijn tijd zo goed als om is, tenzij ik nog een scherpe vraag heb.
Als dj maak je veel mee, maar wat is Rich’ meest bizarre backstagemoment? Zijn wenkbrauwen gaan omhoog en het gezicht van de artiest begint te gloeien.
‘How much tape do you have, man? I’ve got hours, no days of stories.’
Geef me je beste. Medina denkt even rustig na. Een paar seconden is het stil, totdat een klein grijnsje verraadt dat hij een pareltje te pakken heeft uit de schatkamer van zijn herinneringen.
Prince in da house
‘Ah, yes. I played the ten-year anniversary of a party called Deep. It’s a house music party organized by a guy called Marques Wyatt in Los Angeles’, begint Rich. ‘Louie Vega was performing in the main room. Me and DJ Spinna were playing in the side rooms. So the main room was house music oriented and me and Spinna were playing breaks, soul and funk as an alternative. This way people could have a break.’
Hij gebaart met het glas whisky in zijn hand alsof hij de tent voor me uit wil tekenen in 3D.
‘So we’re doing our thing and suddenly Prince came to the party. He kind of passed through our room with his entourage. Big muscle guys all around him and Prince with his cape in the middle. Fifteen minutes later – after he had said hi to Marques and Louie – he came back to our room for the next three hours.’
Glimlachje en een dramatische stilte.
‘He was just sitting. Listening. When I put on a record that he liked, he would reach out with his cape and make a gesture of appreciation. It’s like getting a handshake from God. So that was pretty crazy.’
Yup, dat is pretty crazy. De deur van de backstage gaat open, dit is ons eindsein. Medina schudt me de hand. De beste man vindt het prima dat ik snel als fanboy met hem op de foto ga, maar dan is het ook echt klaar met de pret. Bedankt, Rich!
